TECTONIC
This is where we start to explore and acknowledge the importance of human body measurements and the human's movements in a space. This project plays a vital role for us as it is applied in every architectural structures.
For this assignment, we are supposed to design a bamboo structure based on a banal activity. From there we were to include the design elements and principles we've understood from project 1 and further explore to make it suitable for our chosen banal activity. The dimensions given to us was a maximum of 4 square meter cube. We are asked to do some exploration models and as for our final it was a 1:1 scale in bamboo. We were to present our bamboo structure along with a series of orthographic drawings and 10 tattoo stamps. This was a group project.
STRETCHING is our chosen banal activity and as a group of seven we were to design, materialise, construct, and present a 1:1 bamboo tectonic structure within 6 weeks. We chose this banal activity mainly because we think that it is an simple yet very complex human movement that would translate poetically and beautifully if we were able to design proficiently.
The name of our bamboo structure is THE OUTSTRETCH PORTAL. Just like the name, our structure is a tectonic that allows user to experience the full journey of a stretching routine. From contracting your entire body to a ball and gradually expanding and straightening your posture until every single muscle cell is thoroughly stretched and relaxed, the bamboo structure that we created is able to capture every essence of the movements poetically through the facade and the interior spaces.
Every blood sweat and tears of ours were put into the details of our bamboo construction especially the joint lashing methods. At the end of the day, sleepless nights are all worth it while we admire our final products.

This assignment brought a conscious awareness to the social responsibility of architects in designing for a sustainable future. It equipped us with the knowledge of ergonomics and anthropometrics and how it plays into creating a spatial experience that is unique for the user.
