ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO III

(ARC 60408)

THE JOURNEY OF 5 SENSES
: LINEAR TYPOLOGY
Spatial organisation is a key consideration for architects in architectural design. The study and exploration of different spatial organisation methods is important in design because it informs human occupation, behaviour, and experience within architectural spaces. Writers such as Francis D.K. Ching labeled this as architectural ‘order’ whilst Alexander Purves called this ‘the formal patterns’.

Project 1 is an introductory project by which we were required to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics through simple design exercises. This is an individual project, we were to propose ONE schemes of Spatial Translations themed ‘Journey of the five senses’. We were required to design in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial
types of your choice. There is no specific site for this design work. The story
of our spatial translation should translate into a narrative, and it should be
informed by precedents studies.

For the first part of the project, I carried out my precedent on the Boh Visitor Centre by the ZLG Design on Cameron Highland. Its linear typology is what made it an iconic architecture landmark. The design illuminated me with the concept of using mere disposition and construction techniques  to create an extraordinary experiential space. I also admire the architects' aspiration to set a new tone for Malaysian architecture whilst utilising entirely natural finishes and raw materials as a big gesture.
After attaining sufficient knowledge on linear typology, I proceeded with the design activity of creating a poetic experiential structure. With the given theme of the Covid-19 pandemic, I came up with the narrative of oblivious - infection - self reflection - virus invasion - depression - imprison - freedom. Each chamber provokes different sensational feelings allowing user to experience the stages of being infected with the corona virus.
